What do you need for a new electricity and/or gas connection?

Here is the information we’ll need from you to handle your new connection request.

MPAN or MPRN. (Meter Point Administration Number) or (Meter Point Reference Number).

You can only get these from your electricity distribution company or gas network operator.

You will need to contact your distribution company and apply for a new connection, then they will assist you with which type of supply you will require. Your MPAN for electricity is a unique 13-digit reference that identifies each electricity supply point. The MPRN is the equivalent for your gas supply and it is usually a 10-digit number.

These are the unique meter numbers that help energy companies identify your home or business before they can start the new application request.

We are unable to start a new connection application without your MPAN or MPRN.

We need to know the type of meter you need fitted.

For electricity you need to get the next details from your local distribution company:

  • Is it three-phase or single-phase supply - this will impact how much power you will need

  • KVA (kilovolt amps), which stands for electrical pressure.

  • Single rate or 2 rate ( Economy 7) meter. It depends how much energy you are going to use if you compare day/night usage. If at night time you are going to use much more energy than during the day then you could benefit from an Economy 7 meter, however if you are using more electricity through the day than through the night a single rate meter would be perfect for you.

For gas you need to obtain the following details from your gas network operator:

  • Low or medium pressure. It depends on the type of pipes which are in your area, and you can get this information from your gas distribution company.

  • The size of the meter: U6, U16, U25.

  • Peak Hourly Load - Each meter has a maximum amount of gas that can flow through it, this flow of gas is known as the peak hourly load. The peak hourly load is the key to finding out what size meter you need, depending on your required peak hourly load you may need a smaller or larger meter.

The relevant cables, fuses or pipes have been installed in your property.

Your distribution company, who provides you MPAN or MPRN, should complete the necessary works which are required before we can install the meter.

The correct location should be prepared for the meter, as our engineers can only complete the installation, when all the cables, pipes and fuses are laid and installed by the distribution company.

The address that needs electricity and gas should be registered with Royal Mail.

We need to ensure that our correspondence and bills reach the correct address and the correct person, so your address needs to be updated/registered with Royal Mail.

Contact details.

The details which you will have in your account with us: customer name, phone number, e-mail address.

For businesses - company name, who will be the contact person in the account, company entity and details.

Photos of where the meter(s) are being installed.

Before we can book an appointment date for you, we need to be sure that the site is ready, and all cables, fuses, pipes are in place.

For these purposes we require a photo of the site and meter location.

We need to know your Estimated Annual Consumption (EAC).

Your EAC is an estimate of how much energy you might use in a year. You could find out these numbers from your bill if you have other sites, or speak to your electrician, or we could estimate these numbers based on our experience.

We need these numbers in order to provide a quote.

What is the new connection process?

New connections are not as complicated as they may seem. We’ll support you from very first contact until your first bill and we do all of this free of charge.

From your first contact with us through to your meter installation we anticipate it will take between 4 to 6 weeks.

We will strive to confirm an earlier appointment, however it will depend on the availability of our technicians. Throughout the entire process you will be supported and in touch with your Energy Specialist, who is there in order to make everything smoother and easier for you.

  1. Firstly we need to have all of the information from you. (You can see our checklist with the information above).

  2. If you are choosing us as your energy provider company, then we will create an account for you in our system and register your supply with us. Before registration we agree on the prices, and if you’re happy with the prices then we agree on a contract. After that we register the supply in our system.

  3. Once the registration is accepted, which usually takes a few working days, we can then look for the next available appointment.

  4. Once the site is ready we can book the meter installation appointment. We aim to install your meter in 4-6 weeks.

  5. Your meter installation. Our technician will get your new meter connected and check that everything is working fine.

  6. You are with us!
