How can you reduce your carbon footprint?

What is eco-anxiety and how to talk about it?

As we become increasingly aware of the urgent need to combat climate change, many of us in the UK are looking for ways to make our homes more energy efficient.

The good news is you can take action today that will start to reduce your carbon footprint.

Use less energy.

It may sound obvious, but if we are able to use less energy overall, we are going to reduce our carbon footprint. But if you’re wondering how you can do that, we have a number of energy saving tips on our blog - many of which you can do with little effort.

Switch to renewable energy

It’s another obvious one. And if you’re reading this, you may well have already done it. But switching to renewable energy (such as wind, solar or hydro) is such a simple thing to do.

E.ON Next offers 100% renewable electricity* when you choose a fixed tariff from us. And it’s so easy to switch.

We’ll deal with your existing supplier (that includes sending them your final meter readings). You’ll have your own dedicated Energy Specialists, providing you with expert service whatever your query. Plus, we are part of The Energy Switch Guarantee, which means you can rest assured that your switchover will be safe and speedy.

Support renewable energy projects.

By choosing a fixed tariff with E.ON Next, you're supporting the growth of renewable electricity projects in the UK. The more demand from customers like you for renewable energy, the more these projects can expand and the more we become a renewable energy nation.

Join our community.

If you’ve joined E.ON Next, you’re no doubt passionate about reducing your carbon footprint. That’s great, because we have a community of people just like you.

It’s a place where you can exchange tips, ideas, and success stories, find out how other people are making a positive impact on the environment and make your journey towards a smaller carbon footprint ever more rewarding and enjoyable.

Little things to make your home more energy efficient.

We also provide advice to help you make your home more energy-efficient. Simple changes could make a big difference in your energy usage and emissions. (Not every tip involves getting a builder or tradesperson in to do it for you!)

And not only will quick fixes reduce your carbon footprint, they can save you money too.

For example, according to the Climate Change Committee, turning down radiators in less-used rooms by just 1.5 °C can save the typical household around £68 a year, while simply drawing curtains to keep the heat in could save you around a tenner annually1.

And the Energy Saving Trust believe that switching appliances off at the plug could save you around £60 a year2. They’re simple quick fixes any of us can do.

So check out our other great tips and tricks on saving energy and start saving energy today!

Smart thermostats.

E.ON Next offers smart thermostats that could help you optimise your heating and cooling systems.

For example, our Easy Control Smart Thermostat works with an app on your smartphone to let you control your heating and hot water together. It can turn your heating down for you when you leave home and it will even learn your heating routine then automatically adjust your boiler programmes to match.

Devices like these can help you reduce energy wastage and save money, all while decreasing your carbon footprint. But if you’re not in the market for one of those, maybe you could set the timer on your boiler.

It may not be as sophisticated or convenient as a smart thermostat, but if you know your heating and hot water needs, you can fine tune your settings so that your boiler and heating come on only when you need them.

Electric vehicle charging.

Transport emissions are a big part of the UK’s carbon footprint. But did you know that according to the government, transport actually accounts for around a third of all our territorial carbon emissions3?

Like the government, we believe that transitioning to electric vehicles will reduce emissions and contribute to a cleaner environment4. So if you own an electric vehicle (EV) or are considering making the switch, E.ON Next can help by installing EV chargers at your home.

The saving doesn’t stop with your bill.

We want to make switching to renewable electricity as rewarding as possible for you.

So how about some exclusive discounts on your favourite brands?

If you’re invited to join Next Plus, you simply download our extension for your Chrome browser and it will show you great discounts while you shop with our partners. What’s more, we’ll make a donation to the climate charity, Ecologi, with every purchase you make.

And the longer you are with us, the more rewards you can get access to.

So if you’ve received an invitation, head over to Next Plus and activate it now to start saving.

Digital carbon footprint.

Of course, these suggestions are just a few of the many ways you can reduce your carbon footprint but there are many more. For instance, why not see how you can reduce your digital carbon footprint.

Don’t forget to download our own E.ON Next app to help you manage your E.ON Next account and take more control of your energy use.

These aren’t the only ways you can reduce your carbon footprint and there are many other organisations that are committed to helping you combat climate change. But at E.ON Next, we are working hard to help you reduce your carbon footprint on the road to Net Zero.
